Ecocide release their latest EP ‘Of Endless Decay’ on November 9th with an EP release party in het Slachthuis, Haarlem. A perfect location for this former oldschool deathmetal band, who have slightly transitioned into the more modern realms of death metal. Last year, these guys rose from the death with Metamorphosis, and as they’ve said in the interview, they actually wanted to quit again after that release. However, people enjoyed it too much, as did the band, so now they’re back, again, with new music. Even better; there have been some line-up changes, so it’s not likely they’ll quiet again!

Of Endless Decay is the 4th record Ecocide released, starting with their EP ‘Eye of Wicked Sight’ back in 2013. The band started out as a thrash/death metal band, and their first EP was a nasty, Lovecraft inspired very oldschool death metal release. Since then, the band has released a few very not-old-school deathmetal tracks, and split up. And then out of nowhere, the band came back together in 2023, with yet again an old school deathmetal album called Metamorphosis. We were surprised to see new music coming out so soon after Metamorphosis, especially since it had taken the band so long to come up with that album. And I have to say, I was surprised when Cloak & Dagger came out in May this year.

Cloak & Dagger

Cloak & Dagger was the first track that got released for this EP, and it’s the 3rd track on the EP. It was our first introduction to the new Ecocide sound. And while there are still hints to their older riffs in the mainriff, it very much has a hardcore vibe to it. The break in the middle with the guitar solo brings us back to death metal country, so we get an easy transition into the new sound. But this track is HEAVY. Heavier, more intense, than what we heard so far maybe. With the core influences, there’s a whole new level of intensity. This was also the first time we heard how much Sten has improved his vocals. The low, powerful grunts, that, yes, can go even lower as you can clearly hear on this track, add a whole new layer of depth to the track.

Penance

When Penance dropped, I was actually blown away. I asked Ecocide, when they dropped their previous single, if they were going the core route now that Sten was fully their vocalist and they changed their insta-handle from EcocideOSDM to just Ecocide. They told me they wouldn’t, that it would just be modern death metal. But with Penance, they are actualy disproving that point. There’s definitely some core influences there, even though it’s still not fully metalcore or deathcore. And not just in the vocals, either. Check out that break in the middle. It’s not an actual breakdown, but it’s very close to being one! And also, the very shout-along-able ‘Welcome to the Abyss, the final penance’  This has been, and still is now the full EP got released, my final track of this record.

Embers

Embers is the opening track on the EP, but got released as the 3rd single. There is definitely some core influence in this track as well, but it’s more of a blend. A modern approach to death metal, with intricate riffs, pounding drums, core-inspired vocals. In the post-chorus, the old Ecocide gets a few bars to shine, though it quickly turns into an angry ‘let’s break things’ riff again. If you skip through this song, make sure you don’t skip the ending.

Thorns

Thorns is probably the most old-school Ecocide track on this EP, and I really love the main riff. This is probably my second favorite track of this EP, just because of that main riff. It’s a nice melodic riff, and a good hook, even more so when performed live. I can only imagine what those guitar harmonies look like on stage. There’s no breakdown in this track, but plenty of time to run around in a circle pit. The ending to the track is a nice ending to the EP, and we can’t wait to see what else this band has in store for us.

Final Thoughts

Ecocide is evolving, and that certainly isn’t a bad thing. The bands has improved on all fronts, and it’s a good decision to get in a another guitar player so Sten can focus solely on his vocals. I’m curious to see what the addition of Jesper will bring to their sound, so hopefully it won’t take long before we get to hear his influence on the tracks.
