Darkness Within – DIION
Release date: 19-05-2023
Darkness Within released their first EP ‘DION’ last year (read the review here). This year the band is back for more with the second part, aptly named ‘DIION’. While playing a lot of shows all over our tiny country, the band still found time to create and record some new music. DIION gives us 3 new tracks that take us back to a few decades ago where, in the band’s words, “Metal was still made of metal”.
Salvage – As Above, So Below
Releasedate: 03-06-2023
Hardcore/Metalcore is the flavor of the season. With bands like Man as Plague, Reformist, Changing Tides, and For I Am King we already had a decent collection, but now we can definitely add Salvage to that list. Salvage is a 5-piece hardcore/metalcore band from the Netherlands. They combine various styles to create their own blend of metalcore, but it’s still very recognizably metalcore. On June 3rd they released their first EP: ‘As Above, So Below’.
The EP
With 4 tracks in total, of which one (Autumn) already previously got released, there aren’t any big surprises. As Above, So Below is a nice introduction to what this band has to offer us. More than decent vocals, with the right amount of grit in the grunts. Interesting guitar riffs, melodic riffs where they are supposed to be, orchestration in the background, all the goodness.
Standing in the Ashes might be my favorite track of this album. It has a nice catchy chorus, which gets amplified by those orchestrations. I imagine this will be a crowd-pleaser when played live. Any of these tracks will be, really. The energy is high and stays high throughout, although the moshpit riffs are most present in The Year of the Gallows. As are the headbang riffs, it’s a pretty versatile track.
Final verdict
As Above, So Below is an EP the band can be proud of, and we as Dutch Metalheads are proud to deliver so many high-quality metalcore acts at the moment. My favorite track of the album is Standing in the Ashes, but all 3 are fine to play on repeat.
Tracklisting:
- Black Clouds
- Autumn
- Standing in the Ashes
- The Year of the Gallows

Axis Mundi is a symphonic death metal band from the city of Groningen, NL. The band recently finished recording their first full length studio album ‘The Sickening Symphony’. This album, mixed and mastered by Mendel bij de Leij, was released on the 29th of april 2022.
After starting in September 2016 the band’s line-up was changed in 2019. Female vocals, which dominated the early sound of the band, were left out, making the band’s sound darker and heavier.
In September 2018 the band released its first self-titled EP ‘Axis Mundi’, presented at their release concert in Simplon (Groningen, NL) on the 20th of September.
The band recorded a new single, ‘Castle Under Siege’ during the spring of 2020. It was released on digital platforms in august 2020. The single featured the band’s new sound and was mixed and mastered by Mendel bij de Leij. The song received many enthusiastic reviews and was played on several online rock/metal radiostations in The Netherlands.
During the following years the band recorded their first full length studio album ‘The Sickening Symphony’. Some songs were released as singles and received positieve reviews. The album itself was released on the 29th of april. This release was celebrated during a release show in VERA (Groningen), also on the 29th of april.

There isn’t much known about Suicide Prophet yet, besides that they just released their self-titled EP on May 18th, and that they are a hardcore band. That doesn’t stop us from reviewing it though.

With their EP ‘Brinicles’, Wake of Dawn introduces their signature blend of metal and EDM to the world. Sharing their inner thoughts and fears, WoD provides an energetic outlet for people who’re stuck pursuing their dreams, while also letting them know they’re not alone. With smashing drums, heavy riffs, and ambient synths -mixed and mastered by Ronnie Young (FOH for Periphery, Plini, AAL)- the band is without a single doubt capable of leading a new movement of EDM-influenced metalcore. The desire to be part of something bigger drives the band to genuinely connect with each other and their fans. This is expressed by using both online and offline socials as a hangout for everyone who’s willing to join. Where fans can feel welcome and share their thoughts and stories.
The idea of WoD started when Gene and Sietse first met. Gene had already made a name for himself in the metal community throughout his work with Distant and To Heaven Earth Is Hell. Joined by brothers Bob en Bram they started Wake of Dawn. Throughout Dutch lockdowns and curfews the band enthusiastically worked on their music and have thus already proven to be strong enough to sustain themselves in the music industry. Influenced by the likes of Northlane, Architects, Periphery and Spiritbox, the band delivers an intense live show with a message and aims to send their audience home with sore necks.
